By now,
everyone has heard about Final Fantasy X and XI
hitting the online gaming scene. While it remains
unclear as to how the migration from console to PC
(or whatever online tool we'd have to use) will
affect the online gaming community or even if any
negligible effect will go through, many people have
started speculating on what Square's planning. E3
gave some glimpses as to how players could team up
to overcome obstacles and adversaries set up by the
computer. However, as any competitive player worth
his salt will tell you, the computer can only
provide so much resistance. A human opponent is way
more complex than anything a CPU can throw at you,
because humans aren't predictable. It's much more
satisfying downing someone you know rather than a
emotionless foe and that's where I hope Square will
take Final Fantasy XI.
Imagine... even if it was just one on one, a RPG
style, turn-based battle to the death with someone
else at the controls on the other side would be a
fantastic adventure within itself. It'd be like
each player facing a boss that actually existed,
having to actually think against you as well.
Another thing I'd like to see Square push the
envelope on would be a deathmatch kind of arena.
